Paws on Frost: Essential Winter Walking & Emergency Tips

Winter brings crisp air and snowy landscapes, but freezing temperatures and icy sidewalks mean extra care is needed when taking your dog out for walks. From chemical ice melts to hypothermia, being prepared helps keep your walks safe and enjoyable all season long.

Protecting Paws from Ice and Salt

Rock salt and chemical de-icers used on roads and sidewalks can irritate and burn delicate paw pads. Additionally, dogs often lick their paws after walks, accidentally ingesting toxic chemicals.

  • Use Paw Protection: Consider dog booties or apply a layer of pet-safe paw wax before heading outside to create a barrier against salt and ice.
  • Wipe Paws Immediately: Keep a warm, damp towel or pet wipe by the door to clean your dog's paws, belly, and legs as soon as you step inside.
  • Trim Paw Hair: For long-haired dogs, trim the fur between their paw pads to prevent ice balls from clinging and causing painful clumps.

Spotting Hypothermia and Frostbite

Animals can suffer from cold exposure just like humans. Keep outdoor trips shorter during severe cold snaps, and watch for these signs:

  • Hypothermia: Trembling, shivering, lethargy, muscle stiffness, or weakness.
  • Frostbite: Pale, grey, or bluish skin on ears, paws, or tails that feels cold or brittle to the touch.

If you notice any of these signs, bring your pet indoors immediately, wrap them in a warm blanket, and contact a veterinarian.

Build a Winter Pet Emergency Kit

Severe storms can cause power outages or keep you snowed in for days. Make sure your home emergency kit includes:

  • A 7-day supply of pet food and bottled water
  • Backup prescription medications
  • Extra blankets and towels
  • A printed copy of vaccination records and medical history
